How to make your perfume last all day

The most common complaint in fragrance isn't the smell — it's the vanishing act. Most of the time the perfume isn't the problem; the application is. Seven habits, in order of impact.

1. Moisturise first

Fragrance clings to oil and slides off dry skin. An unscented moisturiser on your pulse points before spraying can double how long a scent lasts — it's the single biggest upgrade available, and it's free.

2. Spray, don't rub

Rubbing your wrists together crushes the top notes and heats the skin, burning through the opening of the fragrance in minutes. Spray and let it dry untouched. Patience is a fixative.

3. Aim at warmth

Perfume diffuses from body heat. Wrists, neck, chest, behind the ears — anywhere you can feel your pulse is a radiator for scent. The chest is the most underrated spot: it warms the fragrance all day and keeps it in your own orbit.

4. Use fabric and hair strategically

Scent bonds to fibre longer than to skin — a spray on a scarf, lapel or the inside of a hood can still be there tomorrow. Hair holds fragrance beautifully too; mist from thirty centimetres away rather than soaking it, since alcohol is drying.

5. Buy the right concentration

Eau de toilette is built to fade in two to four hours. Eau de parfum — which is what every Velour London bottle is — carries a higher concentration of oils and should give you five to eight, more with the habits above. Heavy materials last longest of all, which is one more argument for real oud.

6. Don't overspray to compensate

After twenty minutes, your nose stops registering your own fragrance — that's olfactory fatigue, not a vanished scent. The people around you can still smell it. Two to three sprays of a well-made eau de parfum is the ceiling; trust it.

7. Store bottles like they matter

Heat, light and humidity break fragrance down — which rules out the classic spot, the bathroom shelf. Keep bottles boxed, in a cool drawer or wardrobe, and they'll smell as intended for years. Our black-and-gold boxes aren't just for the unboxing.
